Small but sturdy, Squirtle is the R/B/G Water-type starter. It is the Pokémon to choose for a game of medium difficulty - strong against the first gym (giving time to catch and train others), but not against the next few.

Ash's Squirtle is obtained in Season 1, Episode 12 "Here Comes The Squirtle Squad". It is the leader of a troupe of sunglasses-wearing Squirtle who wreak havoc around town and join up with Team Rocket to capture Ash and his friends. Pikachu is badly injured, and Ash convinces them to allow him to run for a Potion to heal his best friend. On his return, TR challenges him to a battle, and abandons the Squirtle Squad. Ash saves the leader of the Squad from being killed, and it removes its sunglasses joins him on his Pokémon journey. In Season 3, Episode 43, the squad turns up again at the Fire and Rescue Grand Prix, as a firefighting team. Squirtle assumes leadership of the group again, and Ash releases it to be with its friends.
