A Ruin with a View

Written by Optic for The Anime Network; used with permission

Oldale Town is close, but May complains why Ash is going so fast. He says that he is eager to register for the Hoenn League so that he can start his quest on getting his first gym badge. But when May mentions that she did have a bicycle before Pikachu ruined it, he wisely decides to follow May's request to slow down.

May wonders why Ash's Pikachu isn't in a Pokéball. He explains that Pikachu prefers being outside one. They then find a Azurill. May finds it cute and wants it. She grabs a Pokéball and throws it towards Azurill. She believes that she caught it, but Azurill escapes from the Pokéball. Ash explains that you have to battle the Pokémon first then weaken it in order to catch it.

She then sends out Torchic, but May has trouble controlling it. The Azurill evades all of Torchic's attacks. Torchic then uses Ember and unintentionally hits the family of Marill, Azurill, Azumarill. They retaliate by using water gun on Torchic, and it faints. Pikachu then uses Thunderbolt to scare them away. May feels terrible. Ash says that it'll be alright when they reach the nearest Pokémon Centre so they hurry on.

Ahead, they then find a whole bunch of rocks. Ash and May meet Prof. Alden which explains that they are the Ruins of Oldale and that he is investigating them. He points them to the Pokémon Centre, and Nurse Joy says that a good night's sleep will make Torchic as good as new. May asks for a tour of the Pokémon Centre, but Ash needs to make a phone call to Prof. Oak first.

Meanwhile, outside Team Rocket is talking to Giovanni on his private line. They report that they've reached the Hoenn Region and are ready to carry out new orders. Though they are declined new funds, they have the oppurtunity to set up a new branch office in the Hoenn Region to carry out new operations. What Jessie, James and Meowth don't know is that Giovanni's intention is to learn about the operations of Team Aqua and Team Magma.

Back at the Pokémon Centre, Ash gives May a tour of the Pokémon Centre. They then decide to have something to eat. May is astounded by how convenient Pokémon Centres are. Prof. Alden then joins Ash and May with their meals.

Team Rocket is currently digging. James and Meowth can smell the aroma of food from the Pokémon Centre. James identifies it as spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread sticks on the side. Jessie tells them to snap out of it and says if they continue on with that attitude, Butch and Cassidy (other members of Team Rocket) will take over their job. They decide to work harder, thanks to Jessie's prep talk.

Prof. Alden shows a room that the Pokémon Centre donated for use of his studies and work. Ash notices a picture on the wall that looks like the same ruins they saw earlier. Prof. Alden explains that there is a stone chamber within the ruins and legend has it that it's a sort of bridge or portal between our world and the ancient Pokémon world. But because of it's strange construction any attempts to enter the chamber have caused it to begin crumbling so it's contents remain unknown.

Ash wonders what he means by ancient Pokémon. Prof. Alden continues explaining. He isn't talking about extinct fossil Pokémon like Aerodactyl and Kabuto, he's talking about ancient Pokémon that has been living since ancient times without changing at all. Most of the details involving ancient Pokémon like where they lived and how they lived are still a complete mystery to the world. He then shows a tablet with the correct way to enter the stone chamber written on it. The only thing that is needed is four keys, which haven't been found.

Meanwhile, a group of agents with Houndooms cut off the power to the Pokémon Centre. They then confront Prof. Oldale, Ash and May. They seek his knowledge on how to gain access to the ruins. Reluctantly, Prof. Oldale agrees, and Ash, May and Nurse Joy are locked inside a supply room. They realise that the Pokémon are in danger, so they must switch over to reserve power. Pikachu points at the ventilation shaft, and Ash and Pikachu go into the shaft.

Team Rocket finish digging the tunnel, but did not end up where they had intended. Houndooms then growl towards Team Rocket. An agent asks what they are doing here. Team Rocket ignores them and sends out Arbok and Weezing, but the Houndooms scare them. Arbok and Weezing quickly return to their Pokéballs, and a very confused Team Rocket wisely pop back into their tunnel and head off.

As Ash travels through the ventilation shaft, May meets up with him and says that she doesn't want to be left out on the adventure. Faced with a decision to go left or right, they rely on Pikachu's sense of hearing, which lead them to the right. May is amazed by how smart Pikachu is. The master key is retrieved and the switch to reserve power for the Pokémon Centre is done. They then head over to try and help Prof. Alden.

Back at the Ruins of Oldale, Team Magmar force Prof. Alden to place the four keys on the entrance of the stone chamber. He wonders how is to do that without the keys, but the leader of the group give the keys to him. He is even more shocked on how they got hold of the keys. Reluctantly, he places them in and the entrance opens. Prof. Alden is astounded by the drawings on the wall. The agents take photos inside, and pull out. Ash and May find Prof. Oldale and check if he is alright.

Team Rocket steal the four treasures, but Ash is able to quickly retrieve them back. The sun rises, and as the jewels are placed into place, a stairway is revealed. As they go down, they discover a secret underground supply. May says that it smells so fresh and clean. Ash agrees. An ancient Pokémon then dives out of the water and back in, which amazes everyone. It is true, these ruins are a portal between the present and the past.

Nurse Joy is happy to report that her Torchic is as good as new, and May sends it out to hug it. Ash asks whether those agents were identified. Nurse Joy says the Officer Jenny was unable to find any traces. Ash and May then decide to move on to Petalburg City, but Prof. Alden shows up and says that he has been doing some more researach. Appearantly, every indication has pointed to ancient Pokémon and man interacting peacefully.

Ash and May continue on the road to Petalburg City. Ash remembers that he forgot to ask who the Petalburg City gym leader is. May places her finger on her face and turns a little red. "Hmm... I don't know..."

Able to witness the miracle of an ancient Pokémon, Ash and May discover yet another part of the myserious Pokémon world. And that's just the first of many new revealations that await in the Hoenn region.
